In “Ukiyo no kioku (Memories of Floating World) – Abstract Expressionism,” I explore the Japanese Floating world.
The Floating World, or in Japanese ‘Ukiyo’ (floating, fleeting, or transient world), was an expression of the pleasure-seeking aspects, of the Edo-period Japan (1600–1867). Today in modern Japan, the Edo period and the Ukiyo is only a transient memory. It is intangible and elusive and in stark contrast to modern Japan. I came to understand much of the Floating World when I lived in Tokyo for close to five years. This is the emotional symbolism of the elusiveness of Ukiyo and is painted in the style of abstract expressionism.
When monks stare while mediating, at a Japanese rock garden, eventually it becomes like water. So too, it is my hope that this work becomes Ukiyo memories.
“Ukiyo no kioku (Memories of Floating World) – Abstract Expressionism,” is painted on 12 oz gallery canvas using synthetic polymer and has been sealed with varnish. The canvas is hand-stretched onto a frame is 70.5 cm in width by 156.5 cm in height. The world is one of optimism and is designed to lift the mood of the room.
“Ukiyo no kioku (Memories of Floating World) – Abstract Expressionism,” was created on the 4th day of July 2020.
